Theatre podcast The Score will produce a live concert version of Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk’s musical The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown for their next episode. It will be recorded live at (le) Poisson Rouge November 7 at 7 PM and 9:30 PM.
Directed by Portia Krieger (The Bachelors, Eager to Lose) with music direction by Paul Staroba (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), the concert will feature Alexandra Socha (Red Oaks, Fun Home) in the title role with Corey Cott (The Bandstand, Newsies), Morgan Keene (Newsies nat’l tour), and Kevin Carolan (Newsies, The Ritz).
Here’s how the musical is billed: “18-year-old Samantha Brown sits in a hand-me-down car with the keys in her hand. Caught between yearning for something different and feeling stuck in what her life has become, she telescopes back to a time before her world had fallen apart. As she relives her senior year, we meet Sam’s well-intentioned helicopter parents and her good-natured if unambitious boyfriend, but it’s her painfully alive best friend Kelly that haunts her. Kelly was everything Sam is not—impetuous, daring, brave. She pushed Sam to break rules and do the unexpected. When Kelly’s killed in a car wreck, Sam loses not only her best friend but also the part of herself that was learning how to take risks. Now, paralyzed by fear and inertia, Sam has to discover what purpose grief serves and how to make the first decision of her adult life on her own.”
Kerrigan and Lowdermilk made their Off-Broadway debut in 2006 with their adaptation of Henry and Mudge. In 2011, they released their first album Our First Mistake, which charted at No. 1 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart. Their latest album, Kerrigan-Lowdermilk Live (2013), documents a concert tour that resulted from their $35,000 Kickstarter campaign. Their other musicals include Tales from the Bad Years, The Woman Upstairs, Wrong Number, The Freshman Experiment, Republic, Unbound, and Flash of Time.
