The Museum of Broadway's inaugural special exhibit, The American Theatre as seen by Hirschfeld, has been extended through June 21, which would have been theatre caricaturist Al Hirschfeld’s 120th birthday.

Curated by The Al Hirschfeld Foundation Creative Director David Leopold, the exhibit, which opened in November 2022, takes visitors through nine decades of Hirschfeld’s images of theatre through 25 drawings and prints from 1928 to 2002.

The Museum will also offer a series of free public programming created in conjunction with The Al Hirschfeld Foundation: A National Insanity: Searching for Nina (May 9 at 1 PM), Scenes From The American Theatre as seen by Hirschfeld (May 23 at 5 PM), and Hirschfeld on The Tony Awards (June 8 at 5 PM). All three events will be hosted by Leopold.

The exhibit includes Hirschfeld’s iconic barber chair, where he drew all the finished drawings in his career. Visitors are also brought face to face with the original productions of Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera, The King and I, Sunday in the Park with George, Funny Girl, Ragtime, Beauty and the Beast, and Hairspray; as well as portraits of Meryl Streep, Julie Andrews, Stephen Sondheim, Liza Minnelli and John Leguizamo, many of them signed by their subjects.

The Hirschfeld exhibit is included in the price of any ticket to the Museum of Broadway, located at 145 W. 45th St. Visit TheMuseumofBroadway.com.
