Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International has added Ain't Too Proud—The Life and Times of The Temptations to its catalogue. The title is not yet available to license.
The musical, tracking the iconic Motown group The Temptations as they rise from singing on the streets of Detroit to being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, features a score made up of the group's chart-topping hits, including "My Girl," "Get Ready," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," and more. Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew) penned the book, adapted from Otis Williams' 1998 memoir.
The work premiered at Broadway's Imperial Theatre in 2019, going on to receive 10 Tony nominations and winning for Best Choreography (Sergio Trujillo). A North American tour is currently playing the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans through March 3.
"Ain’t Too Proud is the rare show that gets the biographical musical just right," says MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen in a statement. "For devoted or casual fans of the Temptations (and who isn’t?), Ain’t Too Proud tells the group’s legendary story through Dominique Morisseau’s powerful and moving book, as well as through the hit-driven score and magical choreography. After taking North America and England by storm, we are extremely proud to offer Ain’t Too Proud to MTI’s customers."
Those interested in producing the show can sign up for availability updates at MTIShows.com.
The play comes on the heels of a broader cultural conversation about Dahl's work and the prejudice that was embedded in many of his most beloved stories.
