Brandon Ivie, who directed Off-Broadway's Jasper in Deadland, directs this Seattle Rep commission. Opening night is set for April 1.
Here's how it's billed: "From the ashes of Mount St. Helens emerged a monster with mysterious powers — powers that changed one boy's life forever. Freak or hero? Trevor is about to find out with a little help from Mr. Right. Join triple-threat Seattle artist Justin Huertas and friends for one fateful night of adventure, music and love set on the streets of Seattle. Equal parts comic book lore, coming-of-age love story and irrepressible tunes, audiences can expect the unexpected in this indie rock musical."
Huertas serves as writer, librettist, composer and lead actor/cellist in Lizard Boy. His acting credits include Twelfth Night (Seattle Shakespeare Company/Wooden O) as well as regional premiere productions of Avenue Q, Spring Awakening (both at Balagan Theatre), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Contemporary Classics), Speech & Debate (Seattle Rep) and The History Boys (ArtsWest). As a cellist, Huertas has played for Contemporary Classics' New Voices concert series, 14/48: The World's Quickest Theatre Festival and productions of Cloaked, Sweeney Todd, Children of Eden and The Last Five Years.
He is joined onstage by frequent collaborators Kirsten deLohr Helland and William A. Williams, who lend their vocals and play a variety of acoustic instruments, including guitar, ukulele, piano and tambourine.
The creative team also includes set designer L.B. Morse, costume designer Erik Andor, lighting designer Robert J. Aguilar and sound designer Matt Starritt. Front-row seats to every performance are only $5 each. Tickets are available one hour prior to each performance at the Seattle Rep Box Office (in person only). There is an American Sign Language (ASL)-interpreted performance April 18 at 2 PM. There is a pre-show lobby talk with members of the production's artistic team March 31 at 7 PM. Post-play discussions with cast members will be held after the performances on April 4 at 2 PM, April 12 at 2 PM, April 15 at 2 PM and April 19 at 2 PM. There will be a special late-night performance of Lizard Boy May 1 at 9 PM.
