The Jerry Zaks and Robert De Niro-helmed production premiered at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse before officially opening on Broadway in December 2016. A national tour is scheduled to launch in Rochester, New York, in October before an official opening the following month in Los Angeles.

Palminteri himself joined the cast in May, playing the role of Sonny at select performances and becoming the first actor to play the same role in a play, film, and stage musical. Original cast member and Tony nominee Nick Cordero continues with the show, playing the mobster who takes a young Italian-American under his wing on Saturday and Sunday performances.

The current cast also includes Adam Kaplan as Calogero, Richard H. Blake as Lorenzo, the King Kong-bound Christiani Pitts as Jane, Hudson Loverro and Levi Smith as Young Calogero, Lucia Giannetta as Rosina, and Gerald Caesar as Tyrone.

The ensemble features Joe Barbara, Michael Barra, Brianna-Marie Bell, Jonathan Brody, Ted Brunetti, Brittany Conigatti, Alex J. Grayson, Rory Max Kaplan, Charlie Marcus, Janelle McDermoth, Shannon Mullen, Robert Neary, Brandi Porter, Paul Salvatoriello, Joseph Sammour, Joseph J. Simeone, Joey Sorge, Dani Spieler, Cary Tedder, Kirstin Tucker, Keith White, and Christopher Henry Young.

Palminteri first performed his solo show A Bronx Tale, inspired by his own younger years, on the West Coast before a 1989 Off-Broadway premiere. He later returned to the story for the De Niro-helmed 1993 film adaptation, penning the screenplay and taking on the role of Sonny, leading him to such additional film performances as The Usual Suspects and Bullet Over Broadway, for which he earned an Oscar nomination. In 2007, he brought the solo show to Broadway for a limited run.
