Theatrical licensing company Broadway Licensing Global has introduced the first perusal script for high schools and secondary schools interested in producing the school edition of the international hit Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

As previously reported, BLG is collaborating with the Tony-winning play's original creative team, including playwright Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany, and producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, to adapt the show for school theatres. With J.K. Rowling's approval, the revised version will have a shorter running time and innovative ways to bring magical elements of the original production to schools, regardless of budgets or technical capacities.

BLG previously released a website for school teachers and administrators interested in producing the show.

The full-length perusal script is available for purchase to allow teachers and administrators to read the school edition before the play is officially available to license. Two pilot productions will commence early this year in the U.K. and North America. Following those developmental runs, the script will be finalized, with the intention that by late spring, schools can start to license the show for productions.

“To date, we have a queue of thousands of schools from across the globe eagerly awaiting their opportunity to produce this international sensation,” says BLG Founder and CEO Sean Cercone in a statement. “Now, teachers can read for themselves what wonderful opportunities are in store for them and their students, and how practical it can be for their educational theatre program to produce the show with success.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is based on an original story by Rowling, Thorne, and Tiffany. The play takes place 19 years after the source material book series, and follows Harry Potter's son Albus and his friendship with Scorpius, the son of rival Draco Malfoy, in their first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The original West End production premiered in 2016, receiving 11 Olivier Award nominations and winning nine, including Best New Play. The Broadway transfer opened at The Lyric Theatre in 2018, then received 10 Tony Award nominations and won six, including Best Play.
