The Punch & Judy Theatre, designed by architects Murray & Dana, was conceived and financed by Charles Hopkins as an experimental theatre house. It was built in 1914 and located at 153 W. 49th Street. The theatre showcased productions of The Marriage of Colombine, Where’s Your Wife? and Merchants of Venus. The theatre was renamed the Hopkins in 1926 and eventually the World Theatre in 1935. The theatre premiered Devil in the Cheese starring Bela Lugosi and Fredric March, but it did not prove profitable as a legitimate institution. It became a movie house, then a pornographic movie house, and the former Punch & Judy Theatre was ultimately demolished, as the World Theatre, in 1987.
