The Craig Theatre opened at 152 W. 54th Street in 1928, designed by architects R.E. Hall & Company. In 1934, the theatre was renamed the Adelphi, where Leonard Bernstein made his Broadway composing debut with On the Town and Sinclair Lewis received a production of It Can’t Happen Here. The theatre housed transfers of Damn Yankees and later, as the 54th Street Theatre, Bye Bye, Birdie. The former Craig Theatre, then known as the George Abbott Theatre, was purchased by Hilton and demolished in 1970 to make way for an expanded hotel.
