Producers Frederic Thompson, Elmer Dundy, and John W. Gates built the Hippodrome in 1905, touted as the largest theatre in the world. The Hippodrome premiered Rodgers and Hart’s circus musical Jumbo, directed by George Abbott. In 1939, as the theatre became too expensive to maintain, the Hippodrome was torn down.
