From 1980 to 1995, Mr. Evans played what is probably his best-known role, Col. Douglas Austin, the best friend of the billionaire Victor Newman, on CBS's "Young and the Restless."
John Michael Evans was born on July 27, 1920, in Sittingbourne, England. According to the New York Times, Mr. Evans decided at 12 to become an actor after seeing John Gielgud perform onstage in Richard II. He was a Royal Air Force navigator during World War II.
He was married four times. He is survived by his sons Nick and Christopher, and two sisters, Rosemarie and Bridget.
