Description:

Apprentices are trained as Wardrobe professionals. They work directly with professional Wardrobe Supervisors, Costume Shop Staff and Costume Designers on numerous productions in multi-disciplinary performances. Apprentices will gain a working knowledge of costume stock management and maintenance. A clear understanding of the theatrical costuming process is necessary, this position will help refine and strengthen the skills needed to be a professional Wardrobe crew member. This is a full-time position. Work hours are Monday through Friday 9:00- 6:00 pm with occasional night and weekend calls. All work will be in done in-person.

The salary is $16.72 per hour or a contracted amount of $25,414 – $28,089 for the school year.

As part of the Production Department, their work is an integral part providing the highest caliber production experience for the gifted students for whom public performance is a keystone to their training.

About the Professional Apprentice Program: This program provides immersive training for emerging performing arts technicians and administrators, addressing the need for practical training in the field. For over four decades, it has prepared recent graduates, early-career professionals, and individuals undergoing career transitions for employment in the cultural sector. This is achieved through hands-on experience, professional development, and networking and mentorship opportunities.

Role Responsibilities:

Reports daily to Wardrobe and/ or Costume Management to include: Wardrobe Supervisor, Assistant Wardrobe Supervisor, Costume Shop Supervisor, Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor, Costume Design Coordinator, Costume Shop Office Manager.

  • Reports frequently to the Director of the Apprentice Program.
  • Work one on one with Wardrobe Supervisors and the Juilliard technical staff, playing a vital role in the daily operations of the Wardrobe Department and the Costume Shop
  • Function as Wardrobe Staff supporting productions in Opera, Drama and Dance with duties that may include but are not limited to:
    • Develop and maintain Wardrobe tracking documents
    • Monitor, document and respond to rehearsal reports as needed
    • Attend costume fittings, “quick change meetings” and show run-throughs as needed
    • Develop and execute costume maintenance schedules
    • Run crew on shows
    • Post show strikes: laundry, dry-cleaning and restock
    • Other administrative duties as assigned
  • Support Costume Stock Maintenance with duties that may include but are not limited to:
    • Costume stock maintenance and reorganization
    • Weekly restock
    • Work-request costume pulls for Workshops and Events

Minimum Requirements:

  • Passion and basic knowledge of the intended craft.
  • Bachelor’s Degree, or related professional experience and transferable skills, or a combination of both.
  • Ability to contribute to the process in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaboration and teamwork
  • Self-motivated, responsible and creative

Preferred Background:

  • Undergraduate degree focused on theatrical costumes
  • One to two years of professional or collegiate costume experience
  • Work experience with at least two professional theaters
  • Professional Wardrobe experience
  • Working knowledge of costume history
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and G Suite applications
