VIDEO AUDITIONS – HAIR: THE MUSICAL
Vanguard Theater in Montclair, NJ is casting Hair: The Musical – the iconic rock musical that celebrates love, freedom, and the power of a generation.
Seeking bold, soulful performers with killer voices, strong movement/dance skills, and a deep connection to storytelling. This is a show that lives in truth, energy, and raw emotion.

Note: All characters are in their early to late 20’s
Claude Hooper Bukowski – A young, idealistic man torn between following his heart and conforming to societal expectations. Originally from Oklahoma, he has been drafted into the Vietnam War but struggles with his decision to serve or resist. He’s charismatic, introspective, and deeply poetic. (Vocal range: Tenor, Rock/Pop sound)
George Berger – The rebellious, free-spirited leader of the tribe. Berger is wild, unpredictable, and deeply charismatic, often the life of the party. Despite his outrageous personality, he cares deeply for his friends, especially Claude. (Vocal range: Bari-Tenor, strong rock voice)
Sheila Franklin – A strong-willed, politically active woman who fights for peace and love. She is deeply in love with Claude and has a complex, flirtatious relationship with Berger. She is passionate, independent, and a true leader. (Vocal range: Mezzo-Soprano, strong belt)
Hud – A confident and outspoken Black man who challenges racial stereotypes. He’s bold, funny, and a central figure in the tribe, bringing both humor and activism to the group. (Vocal range: Baritone, soul/rock influence)
Woof – A free-loving, gentle soul with an admiration for Mick Jagger. He is playful and flirtatious, often embracing his sexuality with no inhibitions. His love for life is infectious. (Vocal range: Tenor, light rock/pop sound)
Jeanie – A quirky, love-struck young woman who is pregnant (though the father is not in the picture). She adores Claude, despite knowing he doesn’t return her affections. She is humorous, warm, and embodies the spirit of the tribe. (Vocal range: Mezzo-Soprano, folk/rock style)
Dionne – A powerhouse singer with an uplifting and joyful presence. She brings soul and gospel influence to the music, leading large ensemble numbers. (Vocal range: Alto/Mezzo, strong belt, gospel/soul influence)
Crissy – The innocent, wide-eyed member of the tribe. She sings “Frank Mills,” a sweet and naive song about a fleeting romance. (Vocal range: Soprano, light and airy sound)
Margaret Mead – A middle-aged woman (often played by a man in drag) who is humorously fascinated by the hippie lifestyle. (Spoken role with some singing)
Hubert, Paul, Leata, Emmaretta, Suzannah, Hiram, Walter, Steve, Linda, etc. – Various members of the tribe with their own unique personalities and moments throughout the show.

All rehearsals and performances are held at Vanguard Theater, conveniently located just a 30-minute train ride from NYC to Bay Street station in Montclair, NJ. From there, it's just a two-minute walk to the theater.
