REPORTS TO: General Manager

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday. Evening and weekends required.

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, exempt; benefits eligible after 90 days.

COMPENSATION: $70,000-$75,000; DOE

POSITION SUMMARY

Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Berkeley Rep) has grown from a storefront stage to an international leader in innovative theatre. Known for its ambition, relevance, and excellence, as well as its adventurous audience, the nonprofit has provided a welcoming home for emerging and established artists since 1968. Over 6 million people have enjoyed more than 500 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 85 world premieres. Berkeley Rep shows have gone on to win 8 Tony Awards, 9 Obie Awards, 11 Drama Desk Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 Pulitzer Prize, and many other honors. In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997. Through its annual seven-play season, together with up to four special event presentations, Berkeley Rep invites audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.

Berkeley Rep is seeking a company manager. The company manager coordinates with the general manager, artistic director, and Production department to plan for and meet the needs of guest artists at the theatre. The position serves as the liaison for Berkeley Rep to guest artists and other outside constituents. The company manager also works as part of a team to determine and maintain show budget line items, takes the lead in planning and executing guest artist events, and is key in establishing a positive and welcoming environment for both artists and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Contracts

  • Make official offers, and negotiate, draft, and facilitate execution of Actors' Equity Association (AEA) performer and stage management contracts and non-AEA performer contracts, including contracts for understudies and swings.
  • Collaborate with Finance and director of human resources and diversity to collect and track performer and stage management employment paperwork.
  • In consultation with general manager, correspond with AEA regarding contracts, closing notices, vacation reports, and other AEA collective bargaining agreement compliance matters.
  • Receive and communicate performer sick/outage requests and leaves, and coordinate outage and cancellation notifications to Artistic, stage management, and Front of House.
  • Collect and edit program credits, bios, headshots, and information for performers and stage management.
  • Negotiate, draft, and facilitate execution of physical therapy, housing, car rental, production driver, and food vendor contracts, as needed.

Budgets and Financial

  • Generate, manage, and approve weekly and bi-weekly actor and stage manager payroll in compliance with the AEA collective bargaining agreement and California employment and labor law.
  • Process and reconcile department invoices, check requests, credit card statements, and other expenses.
  • Maintain all budgets and records for travel and housing, including but not limited to rent, utilities, telephone, maintenance, supplies, and parking.
  • Accurately track and reconcile departmental expenses and relevant production budget expenses.

Travel, Housing, and Hospitality

  • Arrange all guest artist travel, housing, and local ground transportation as needed.
  • Coordinate parking garage access for guest artists.
  • Coordinate with Operations to generate housing grid for each season, assessing needs for guest artists and Berkeley Rep fellows.
  • Partner with local housing vendors (hotels, corporate housing, landlords) to secure additional housing as needed.
  • Create, update, and distribute itineraries and orientation information to all guest artists and fellows in a timely fashion.
  • Manage arrangements for production company social events and gatherings, including but not limited to: First Rehearsal Meet and Greets, Company Dinners, Opening Night Receptions, and Closing Toasts.
  • Serve on the Berkeley Rep Events Committee to support Berkeley Rep staff social events and celebrations.

Operations

  • Coordinate and collaborate with general manager and director of production to plan and execute projects and production.
  • Coordinate with Operations staff to schedule cleaning and turnover of Medak Center housing.
  • Communicate service requests for Medak Center housing units to Operations on behalf of guest artists.
  • Attend weekly Medak Center Housing check-in meeting with Operations.
  • Maintain Berkeley Rep’s network of medical professionals and ensure that license and insurance coverage remain up to date.

Other

  • Work between two different campuses and multiple spaces, often in a single day.
  • Serve as an emergency contact and first responder to urgent matters from guest artists, both during normal business hours and on nights and weekends.
  • Support and contribute to organization-wide antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access goals and commitments.
  • Mentor and supervise a full-time company management fellow.
  • Positively represent the organization and provide a welcoming and professional experience for external and internal constituencies.
  • Actively participate in workshops, trainings, and company meetings, including harassment prevention, bystander intervention, and other antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Thorough and current knowledge of the LORT/AEA collective bargaining agreement.
  • Working knowledge of California labor laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues across multiple departments, and to collaborate with outside constituents to fulfill project needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with a high degree of emotional intelligence and cultural competency.
  • Interest in and commitment to antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
