DESCRIPTION

The Department of Theatre at Coastal Carolina University, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), invites applications for full-time employment in the position of Assistant Professor of Dance. This is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment to begin in August of 2025. The Department offers a B.F.A degree in Theatre Arts (audition/interview only) with concentrations in Acting, Musical Theatre, Physical Theatre, and Design and Production, a B.A. degree in Theatre, and Minors in Dance and Theatre. The program seeks highly qualified and motivated individuals who will play an integral role in the continued advancement of the program.

This highly collaborative department maintains an ambitious production season, in addition to performing new works and staged readings to connect students with working professionals. Department faculty maintain professional careers in their respective disciplines. Senior B.F.A. performance students participate in a New York Showcase for industry professionals. Physical Theatre students study abroad in collaboration with international partners in the theatre arts.

We seek a teacher-scholar to join one of the nation's top undergraduate Theatre programs, serving over 140 student majors. This faculty member will teach a variety of dance courses, which may include all levels of ballet, jazz, tap, musical theatre, and world dance styles. Based on the skills of the selected candidate, assigned courses may include Fundamentals of Dance, Ballet I, Ballet II, Jazz I, Jazz II, Tap I, Tap II, Dance Appreciation, Musical Theatre Dance Styles, Dance Company, and/or two levels of Musical Theatre Scene Study. The preferred candidate would collaborate on the continued creation of curriculum for our new Dance Minor and a possible future dance major within the Department of Theatre. Additional

courses planned for development with this new curriculum include Modern I, Modern II, Dance Notation, History of Dance, World Dance Traditions, and Contemporary Dance (including Hip Hop and Commercial Dance). The selected candidate may have opportunities, on rotation, to choreograph, direct, or perform in mainstage productions and dance concerts, and/or mentor student-directed productions in our Discovery Series. Additional duties include collaboration on curricular development, contribution to the department's yearly season auditions, assisting in recruitment for the B.A. and B.F.A. degree programs, and participation in committee work for the department, college, and university.

To be qualified for this position, applicants must have earned a terminal degree (M.F.A. in Dance or Musical Theatre) or a combination of educational training and commensurate professional experience in the theatre/dance industry to meet expected qualifications. Additionally, applicants must have 3-5 years of professional experience in the theatre and/or dance industries, including a strong professional résumé and significant credits as a dancer, performer, choreographer, and/or director in regional and national theatre and/or dance companies and/or media markets. The ability to provide choreography for a variety of productions in a departmental season of musicals is expected. Demonstrated experience as an instructor at the university and/or professional levels and in developing college-level curricula in dance is highly preferred. Professional union affiliations (AEA, SAG/AFTRA, AGVA, SDC, or others) are preferred.
