The musical stage production of Aladdin on Broadway is a spectacle adventure based on a tale that has been reimagined time and again across many cultures. We acknowledge the tremendous cultural responsibility inherent in adapting this timeless fable that is based on tales from Africa, Arabia, China, Europe, India, Persia and Russia and beloved across generations and cultures, and our adaptation is deeply indebted to the rich and diverse tapestry that is Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian (MENASA) cultures, languages and aesthetic traditions.
The audition process is open to actors of all races and ethnicities, gender identities and ages, as well as performers with disabilities.
PREPARATION
Please prepare a brief musical theatre song that shows vocal range. Please bring a hardcopy headshot and resume. An accompanist will be provided.
BREAKDOWN
ALADDIN – 20s, he, him. MENA. Clever, resourceful, street smarts with a heart of gold; best friends with Babkak, Omar and Kassim; seeks a life beyond the confines of poverty. Soaring bari-tenor voice (Bb2 to A4). Principal role.
JASMINE – 20s, she, her. MENA. Intelligent young princess with insight beyond her years and station; seeks a life beyond the confines of privilege. Strong mix, and strong belt to E. Ability to float in the upper mix into soprano (up to F5) and project in lowest register (down to A3). Principal role.
GENIE – 30s-40s, any ethnicity. Quick-witted, fast-talking, ancient genie who knows all time and place; an old-school song-and-dance man. Cab Calloway, Fats Waller type, able to sing jazz. Strong presence in lower range, D5 in strong falsetto, A4 in chest voice. Principal role.
BABKAK – 20s, any ethnicity. Chubby, funny, romantic desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band; the “Crosby” of this Arabian “Road” picture, although perhaps with a bit more flair. Power tenor. (Up to rock solid high C). Principal role.
OMAR – 20s, any ethnicity. Nervous, thin, reedy desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band; the “Lamour.” Bari-tenor, up to A4. Needs good ear for harmony and ability to blend. Principal role.
KASSIM - 20 to early 30s, any ethnicity. Tough and street smart, desert dweller, part of Aladdin’s band. Strong, smart and bold leader of Aladdin’s group. Very strong baritone, hold harmony well. (from A2 up to G4). Principal role.
SULTAN – 50s, MENA. Kind-hearted, widowed ruler of Agrabah; gets so caught up in following the law and tradition that he overlooks his daughter Jasmine’s desires and gets swindled by his own vizier. (Baritone up to E4 though sings very little in the show). Principal role.
JAFAR – 50s, any ethnicity, the royal vizier. Amoral psychopath who’ll not hesitate to destroy anyone he perceives as a threat to his own sinister designs. Good comedic ability and strong evil laugh. Bass, Bass-bari, can be in style of Cyril Ritchard “speak – sing”. (G2-Eb4). Principal role.
IAGO – 40s, any ethnicity, Jafar’s short comedic sidekick. Grovels at Jafar’s feet and has difficulty controlling his temper. Strong tenor or Bari-tenor up to A4. Principal role.
