SYNOPSIS:

Baltimore -1932. Bithiah and J.J. Johnston are quietly surviving the Great Depression, while doing what they can for their neighbors. Fifty-miles south, in the nation’s capital, the world is about to explode. When J.J.’s fellow “doughboys” arrive, in search of someone to lead the fight against a government that’s left the veterans of The Great War and their families to perish, the smell of former glory intoxicates J.J and threatens to derail what little his family has. J.J. must decide what fight is truly his to win and what is worth the risk, should he lose.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

  • Jasper (J.J.) Johnston (30’s, male, African American/Black) the once charismatic captain of the 369th Infantry Regiment (a.k.a. the Harlem Hellfighters, known for their distinct bravery) during World War I; over time has become more routine and knows it; an employed steelworker who struggles with the mundanity of civilian life; continually sleepless over his seemingly singular success during a depression; loves learning and his family.

  • Bithiah Johnston (30’s, female, African-American/Black) J.J’s wife; the primary caretaker of their only daughter Bessie (8); keeper of the household finances; Bithiah is a brilliant woman and the backbone of the family; still madly in love with her husband after many years.

  • Delia Reddy (30’s, female, African American/Black) the best friend of Bithiah; a former singer; grateful recipient of the Johnston’s financial support; J.J. And Bithiah’s upstairs neighbor; as friends, Delia has long been the adventurous foil to Bithiah’s more pragmatic life choices.

  • Lenny Leventhal* (30’s, male, white) an awkward and very nervous veteran of World War I; Jewish; a revolutionary at heart; progressive-minded; brainy; influenced by and emphatic towards a variety of worldviews; willing to follow; indebted to Harry for his actions at the camp; perhaps an experimental communist someday.

  • Harry Thompkins (early 40’s, male, African American/Black) J.J.’s most boisterous “war buddy”; a bachelor who very distinctly only needs to be concerned with himself; lives with many regrets from throughout his life. Wants change but is also excited to relive his “glory days.”

  • Voices of Vivian (any) and Bessie (8 years old) - may be pre-recorded or off-stage voices or a well-staged doubling.

*Actor playing Lenny should double as the Soldier at the top of Act II.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION:

At Moonbox, we believe that the stories we tell are important. They sustain and preserve our community, our history, and our values. Telling racially diverse stories allows us not only to reflect – but also to reflect on – the complexities of our past. When we join together in the act of storytelling, we are united in ways that transcend the everyday. Together, we can use the power of storytelling to honor our commonalities, celebrate our differences, and address historical discrimination and injustice. We pledge to take this power seriously, and to use our voices and the stories we tell to dismantle the systemic racism and white supremacy engulfing our culture, our country, and our industry .We believe in creating spaces that reflect the diversity of our shared community, both on and off the stage, where under-represented voices, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, and people living with disabilities feel valued and important. We believe that accessibility is a human right. We are devoted to providing performances and work spaces that can be experienced and enjoyed universally, and to incorporating accessibility planning into our production, design, staffing, and budgeting processes from day one.
