Off-Broadway News World Premieres From David Cale, Tori Sampson, More in Vineyard Theatre's 2022-2023 Season

The upcoming season commemorates the Off-Broadway company's 40th anniversary.

Vineyard Theatre's upcoming 2022-2023 season—which commemorates the Off-Broadway company's 40th anniversary—will include three world-premiere productions: Sandra, This Land Was Made, and an unnamed new musical.

The season will begin with David Cale’s Sandra, under the direction of Leigh Silverman, with original composition by Matthew Dean Marsh. This production was previously announced for the company's 2021-2022 season, but was later delayed. The one-woman thriller follows its title character as she works to solve the disappearance of her friend.

Tori Sampson's latest work This Land Was Made is set to close the season, following its developmental lab production at the Vineyard in 2018. The play will be directed by Taylor Reynolds and takes place in a bar in Oakland in 1967—when the city was ready for some radical change.

Details are under wraps for the third production, but it is a new musical and expected to play in the spring of 2023. Dates for the first two productions are to be announced.

"We are excited to celebrate 40 years of Vineyard Theatre with three incredible world-premiere productions," says Artistic Directors Douglas Aibel and Sarah Stern. "Each of these new works, by gifted and daring storytellers, examines the power of stories in personal and cultural transformation, and each exemplifies the Vineyard's mission to push the boundaries of what theatre can be and do. We'll be announcing a series of special 40th anniversary events throughout the season too, so stay tuned!"

The Vineyard previously staged the world premieres of Charly Evon Simpson’s sandblasted, Lucas Hnath’s Dana H., which received a Broadway transfer in October 2021 and won the 2022 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play (Deirdre O'Connell), and Paula Vogel's How I Learned to Drive, which made its Broadway premiere early this year—reuniting the Vineyard cast and director—and received three Tony Award nominations including, Best Revival of a Play, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play (David Morse), and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play (Mary-Louise Parker).
