The trailer is now available for Flora and Son, a new movie musical from writer and director John Carney (Once, Sing Street). The film will premiere in select theatres September 22, and will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ September 29.
Flora and Son follows Flora (Eve Hewson), a single mom struggling to raise her rebellious teenage son Max (Orén Kinlan). When Flora gives Max an acoustic guitar in an attempt to prompt a new hobby, the two begin to find connection through music. Joseph Gordon-Levitt also stars in the film as a guitar instructor. Adaptations of Carney's projects have been seen on and off-Broadway in the past. His 2007 film Once was adapted into a musical which reached Broadway in 2012, taking home eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. His 2016 film Sing Street was also adapted for the stage, playing a sold-out Off-Broadway run during New York Theatre Workshop's 2019-2020 season. Plans were made for a 2020 Broadway transfer, but halted due to the pandemic.
A return to Broadway for Sing Street has not been announced, but an original cast recording was released in April 2020, and the show was presented by Boston's Huntington Theatre Company in 2022, with hopes of moving to Broadway.
