Lin-Manuel Miranda marked the anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol Building with a special performance of Hamilton's "Dear Theodosia."
Introduced by Miranda and featuring Hamilton alumni Jared Dixon, Miguel Cervantes, Jamael Westman, Julius Thomas III, Pierre Jean Gonzalez, Joseph Morales, Edred Utomi, Nicholas Christopher, and Josh Tower, the filmed performance was played for lawmakers and broadcast live on CSPAN, who tweeted the clip. “We should never take our rights and liberties for granted, but we must remain committed to finding a way forward together,” says Miranda while introducing the performance.
Centered on an American Founding Father, Hamilton has long had close connections with the U.S. political world; the first public performance of any of its material was at the White House in 2009, where Miranda premiered "My Shot" at an evening of poetry, music, and spoken word. The Tony- and Pulitzer-winning musical continues its run on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
