Video Watch: Broadway's Kimberly Akimbo Visits NPR for a Tiny Desk Concert

Hear new arrangements of the Tony-nominated musical's "Better," "Anagram," "Father Time," and more.

The cast of Broadway's 2023 Best Musical Tony nominee Kimberly Akimbo dropped by the NPR offices recently to perform a Tiny Desk Concert, the company's 2008 video series spotlighting special concert performances set among the cubicles of NPR. Watch the concert above.

The musical continues its run at the Booth Theatre.

The company took the occasion to prepare some new arrangements of songs from the Tony-nominated score (by composer Jeanine Tesori and lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire), including the show's "Better," "Anagram," "Father Time," and "Great Adventure." On hand to perform were 2023 Tony nominees Victoria Clark and Bonnie Milligan, along with Steven Boyer, Alli Mauzey, Olivia Elease Hardy, Fernell Hogan, Michael Iskander, and Nina White. The performance also includes a special understudy performance from Miguel Gil, filling in for 2023 Tony nominee Justin Cooley. The band is led by music director Chris Fenwick, with Tesori also on hand to introduce the songs.

With music by Tesori and a book and lyrics by Lindsay-Abaire adapted from his play, Kimberly Akimbo follows Kimberly, a bright New Jersey teenager with an aging disease that makes her look like a 72-year-old lady even though she's just 16.

Directed by Jessica Stone and featuring choreography by Danny Mefford, the production began performances at Broadway's Booth Theatre October 12, 2022, and officially opened November 10 after a world premiere run Off-Broadway in 2021 via Atlantic Theater Company.
