Daniel Aukin won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for his work in Stereophonic. The play made history as the most Tony-nominated play ever, with 13 nods. Aukin's previous Broadway credit is Fool For Love, though he's well-known Off-Broadway and regionally (having previously won three Obie Awards).
Backstage after his win, Aukin grappled with the true value of awards with Playbill. "This means recognition for making a really idiosyncratic, really unique piece of theatre. And if that widens people's minds about my work on a Broadway stage, I think that's to everyone's benefit... The reward is that it brings more attention to the work of my collaborators, and to David Adjmi's amazing play, which I think deserves attention. If this can help bring attention to that work, then I'm thrilled."
See everything Aukin had to say after accepting the honor in the video above, in an interview with Playbill's Jeffrey Vizcaíno!
