Video Video: See Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman Hit Marie's Crisis for a Special Sing-Along

The Some Like It Hot composers returned to where they first met 45 years ago to play and sing through some of their most beloved songs with some special friends.

Fade in on some friends.... Tony Awards-nominated Some Like It Hot songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman headed to Marie's Crisis in NYC's West Village last Thursday. There, they regaled the crowd with a special sing-along of some of their most beloved tunes. The evening was particularly special for Shaiman and Wittman, who met at Marie's more than 45 years ago, then just fellow theatre fans looking to belt out some of the pair's most memorable songs. Marie's Crisis is a piano bar, where the pianist plays exclusively showtunes and bargoers are encouraged to sing along.

Joining Shaiman and Wittman for the June 1 get-together was Annie Golden, singing Hairspray's "Good Morning, Baltimore"; Shoshana Bean, singing Catch Me If You Can's "Fly, Fly Away"; and Shayna Steele, singing Some Like It Hot's "Ride Out the Storm." See highlights from those songs and more in the video above above.

Shaiman also sang “Some Like It Hot” from Some Like It Hot and also led a singalong of “Welcome To The 60s” from Hairspray, “You Can’t Stop The Beat” from Hairspray, and “Let Me Be Your Star” from Smash.

Shaiman and Wittman, who won a 2003 Tony for their score to Hairspray, are nominated for 2023 Tony Awards for their work on Some Like It Hot, continuing its run at the Shubert Theatre. The musical is the most Tony nominated show of the season, with 13 nods, also including Best Musical and Best Orchestrations. The production opened December 11, 2022.

Adapted from the 1959 film written and directed by Billy Wilder, Some Like It Hot features a book by The Inheritance Tony winner Matthew López and Amber Ruffin and a score by Hairspray's Shaiman and Wittman, with the former providing music and both contributing lyrics. Tony winner Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs. Read reviews for the show here.

Inspired by the French film Fanfare of Love, Some Like It Hot follows two Prohibition-era jazz musicians in Chicago (played on screen by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), who witness a mob hit and go into hiding by disguising themselves as members of an all-female band. Through their escape plot, the two become enamored with the band's singer and ukulele player, Sugar, played on screen by Marilyn Monroe. The film was previously adapted for the stage as the 1972 musical Sugar, with a score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill and a book by Peter Stone.
