German singer and actor Ute Lemper returns to New York with her cabaret show Songs From the Broken Heart September 23 and 24 at Joe’s Pub in New York City.
A major interpreter of the works of theatre composer Kurt Weill, she is promising songs by Jacques Brel, Nick Cave, Charles Bukowski, Leo Ferre, and Tom Waits, along with several of her own compositions that tell “stories of life, wonder, love, doubt, and loss, spanning from her Song Trilogy of Poets to her own tales of long sleepless nights taking the occasional detour down a dark side alley into the Streets of Berlin and Paris.”
Lemper sings in English, German, and French. She performed this show previously at Joe’s Pub in June.
In addition to her singing career, Lemper appeared on Broadway as Velma Kelly in in the long-running revival of Chicago, a role she also played in London, winning the 1998 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She won the 1987 Molière Award for Best Newcomer for her performance as Sally Bowles in the original Paris production of Cabaret.
She will be accompanied by Vana Gierig (piano), Romain Lecuyer (bass), and Todd Turkisher (percussion).
In this one-man reimagining of Richard II, Shakespeare’s work is stripped to its core, one actor embodying every ambition, betrayal, and fall from grace.
