Tony winner David Cromer will direct Todd Almond's new solo musical, I’m Almost There, at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe.
Running at Summerhall's main hall August 1 through 26, the piece, both written and performed by Almond, is produced by Audible, Francesca Moody Productions, and DryWrite.
A modern reimagining of The Odyssey as a love story, the musical centers on one man's struggles to let love into his life, all as he struggles to overcome his unhinged neighbor, a seductive cult, a self-obsessed vampire, and a cat intent on dragging him to hell.
Almond is known for starring in the TV show Gossip Girl, and being a part of the original Broadway production of Girl From the North Country. Additionally, he co-starred with Courtney Love in his original musical Kansas City Choir Boy, and has starred in three of his original musicals for the Public Theater at Central Park's Delacorte Theater: The Tempest, The Winter's Tale, and The Odyssey.
Said Almond, "After many years of performing in New York City and across the USA, I’m thrilled to be making my Edinburgh Fringe debut this year with I'm Almost There, and to at last be working with my brilliant friend, director David Cromer. This piece is deeply personal to me—it is my homage to storytellers who have passed down the epic story of The Odyssey through generations and to songwriters who somehow manage to set what we all feel to music. The Edinburgh Festival is an incubator for exciting new work, and I'm thrilled to be supported by phenomenal producers Audible, Francesca Moody Productions and DryWrite, who make theatre with such care and creativity.”
In addition to Cromer and Almond, the creative team includes music supervisor and co-orchestrator Jonathan Mastro. The live band will include harpist and vocalist Erin Hill, and bassist Lucas McCrosson.
