Bill Irwin and John Douglas Thompson

In 2023, Irish Repertory Theatre will kick off the new year with a production of Samuel Beckett's Endgame starring Tony winner Bill Irwin (On Beckett) and John Douglas Thompson (The Emperor Jones). Performances will begin January 25, with opening night set for February 2 and a run set through March 12.

Joining Irwin and Thompson in the cast will be Joseph Grifasi (Dinner at Eight) and Patrice Johnson (runboyrun/In Old Age). Playing on the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage, the macabre tragicomedy follows Hamm, an isolated, blind, and chair bound man whose only company is his parents, aging and legless, and his servant Clov.

The production will feature set design by Charlie Corcoran (The Butcher Boy), costume design by Orla Long (The Butcher Boy), lighting design by Michael Gottlieb (A Touch of the Poet), sound design by M. Florian Staab (The Butcher Boy), and properties by Deirdre Brennan (The Dead, 1904). Jeff Davolt (Autumn Royal) will serve as production stage manager with Giselle Raphaela as assistant stage manager.

Also announced is an upcoming run of The Second Girl playwright Ronán Noone's The Smuggler on the W. Scott McLucas Studio Stage. Conor Bagley (Two by Friel) will direct the January 18-February 26 run, which will star Michael Mellamphy (The O'Casey Cycle). Opening night for the work, written entirely in rhymed verse, is set for January 26. The Smuggler tells the story of Irish immigrant Tim Finnegan as his place in the local community of Amity, Massachusetts becomes fraught and the loss of employment drags him into the island's dark side. How far will he go to regain his self-respect?

The Smuggler will feature scenic design by Ann Beyersdorfer (We Are The Tigers), lighting design by Michael O’Connor (Belfast Girls), and sound design by Liam Bellman-Sharpe (I Am My Own Wife). Michael Palmer (Jack Was Kind) will be production stage manager.
