National Tour News The Sound of Music Will Launch New North American Tour

Director Jack O'Brien and choreographer Danny Mefford are returning after working on the 2015 tour to give the production a "creative facelift."

A new North American tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music is set to launch September 9, 2025 at The Kennedy Center. Directed by Tony winner Jack O'Brien, the tour will continue into 2026, with stops in more than 55 cities.

O'Brien directed the musical's most recent tour of the U.S., which ran from 2015-2016. Danny Mefford will also return as choreographer.

“A few years ago, I was part of a group of collaborative artists who, almost inadvertently, stumbled on original conceptions for the stage mounting of The Sound of Music that had never found their way into production," O'Brien said in a statement. "We felt as if we were awakening Sleeping Beauty herself, and the results exposed a version of this classic virtually unknown before, and yet more dramatic, more detailed, more rapturous, and more touching than any we had experienced. It is with extreme enthusiasm and a keen sense of anticipation those same artists once more return to complete the work we began, and give this most beloved of all musicals the creative facelift it deserves. We truly believe the original authors would be thrilled. And we believe you will be, too!”

“It’s a great privilege to bring a new tour of this landmark musical to theaters across North America," producer Sean Patrick Flahaven, who also serves as Concord's chief theatricals executive. "People of all ages will discover or rediscover their love of this classic story that remains so appropriate for our time. Thanks to our distinguished team, led by the master Jack O’Brien, audiences can expect a truly magnificent production of The Sound of Music."

The Sound of Music features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Loosely based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, the beloved musical follows Maria Rainer, who becomes a governess to the seven children of a widowed naval commander in Austria just as the Nazi party is coming into power. The original Broadway production in 1959 was built around Mary Martin's performance as Maria, but the musical is known best to most from its 1965 film adaptation starring Julie Andrews, which has become a beloved classic.

The creative team will also include set designer Douglas Schmidt, costume designer Jane Greenwood, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer Jonathan Deans, musical supervisor Andy Einhorn, and hair and wig designer Tom Watson, with casting by The Telsey Office.

Concord Theatricals and NETworks Presentations are producing.

Casting and a full itinerary will be announced at a later date.
