Following its original premiere at Ars Nova and subsequent productions Off-Broadway and at American Repertory Theater, Dave Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre November 14, 2016. The production, directed by Rachel Chavkin with choreography by Sam Pinkleton, played 32 previews and 336 performances before closing September 3, 2017. The musical earned 12 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, winning two for Best Lighting Design of a Musical and Best Scenic Design of a Musical.
Adapted from a 70-page selection of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, the electro-pop musical tells the story of indiscretion and the hope of redemption when a beautiful ingénue visits Moscow while she waits for her beloved fiancé Andrey to return from the war.
Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 starred Denée Benton as Natasha, Josh Groban as Pierre, Brittain Ashford as Sonya, Nicholas Belton as Andrey/Bolkonsky, Nick Choksi as Dolokhov, Amber Gray as Hélène, Grace McLean as Marya D., and Lucas Steele as Anatole.
