International News See Who's Joining Angels in America’s James McArdle in London Peter Gynt The National Theatre has also announced casting for productions of Anna and Downstate, the latter a co-production with Steppenwolf.

Angels in America Theatre World Award winner James McArdle, as previously reported, will star in the title role of the National Theatre production of Peter Gynt, by David Hare after Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt.

Performances will begin in the Olivier Theatre June 27 in a co-production with Edinburgh International Festival. Opening night is set for July 9. Jonathan Kent will direct with set and costume design by Richard Hudson, lighting design by Mark Henderson, sound design by Christopher Shutt, and movement direction by Polly Bennett.

McArdle will be joined by the newly announced Caroline Deyga, Jonathan Coy, and Ann Louise Ross.

Peter Gynt will transfer to Edinburgh for the International Festival in August 2019.

In other National Theatre news, Ella Hickson and Ben and Max Ringham's Anna will begin previews May 11 prior to an official opening May 21 in the Dorfman. Phoebe Fox (Twelfth Night, A View from the Bridge) will star in the title role alongside Nathalie Armin, Max Bennett, Jamie Bradley, Georgia Landers, and Dwane Walcott. In the play Anna and Hans are married, in love, and moving up in the world—but it is a world ruled by suspicion. Natalie Abrahami directs the thriller, which uses individual audio headsets to give the audience intimate access to events as they unfold over one evening.

Also in the Dorfman, Bruce Norris’ Downstate, a co-production with Steppenwolf Theatre Company, will begin performances March 12 prior to a March 20 opening. Directed by Tony winner Pam MacKinnon, the American and British cast includes Steppenwolf ensemble members Glenn Davis, K. Todd Freeman, Francis Guinan, and Tim Hopper, together with Aimee Lou Wood, Cecilia Noble, Eddie Torres, and Matilda Ziegler. Davis, Freeman, Guinan, and Hopper also starred in the Steppenwolf production of the play, which is set in downstate Illinois, and concerns four men convicted of sex crimes against minors, who share a group home where they live out their lives in the shadow of the offenses they committed.

The return of Stephen Sondheim's Follies, Tartuffe (starring Tony winner Denis O'Hare), and Caryl Churchill's Top Girls are among the many other productions scheduled for the National season. For more information NationalTheatre.org.
