Upcoming documentary Spring Awakening: Those You've Known follows the musical's original Broadway cast reuniting for a one-night-only concert held last year to benefit The Actors Fund. Set to premiere May 3 on HBO and HBO Max, the original cast, creative team, and invited guests attended the film's premiere screening April 25 in NYC.
Following the red carpet and screening was a performance of select songs from the musical, including "Mama Who Bore Me," "Touch Me," and "Totally F**cked," sung by the original cast members and accompanied on guitar by Sheik.

With music by Sheik and a book and lyrics by Sater, Spring Awakening opened at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre December 10, 2006. That original production earned eight Tony Awards, including prizes for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score, and a Featured Actor nod for Gallagher. It returned to Broadway in 2015 in a production from Deaf West Theatre.
The movie showcases the reunited original cast and creative team at rehearsal for the reunion concert, in their homes, and backstage with performances from the reunion concert, newly filmed interviews, archival video, and photographs, as well as performance footage from the original production.
The RadicalMedia production is directed by Michael John Warren, produced by Dave Sirulnick and Meredith Bennett, executive-produced by Jon Kamen, Jonathan Meyers, Groff, and Michael John Warren, and co-produced by Pritchard. The senior producer for HBO is Sara Rodriguez with executive producers Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller.
The Fred Ebb Award recognizes excellence in musical theatre songwriting, by a songwriter or songwriting team that has not yet achieved significant commercial success.
