Second Stage Theater celebrated the official Off-Broadway opening of Greg Pierce’s Cardinal, a new drama about big ideas and a changing America. The world premiere is directed by Kate Whoriskey and stars Veep Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky, Happy Endings star Adam Pally, and Girls Emmy nominee Becky Ann Baker.

Chlumsky plays a woman who returns to her Rust Belt town to give it the ultimate makeover. In the midst of all the change, issues of race, tradition, and ambition collide. Completing the cast are Alex Hurt (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Stephen Park (Aubergine), and Eugene Young (Alice in Slasherland).

Pierce’s musical collaboration with John Kander, Kid Victory, premiered Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre. His plays Her Requiem and Slowgirl were both staged at Lincoln Center Theater.
Performances of Cardinal began January 9. The production features sets by Derek McLane, costumes by Jennifer Moeller, lighting design by Amith Chandrashaker, and sound design by Leah Gelpe.
