Race: The Movie: The Play makes its Off-Broadway debut at the SoHo Playhouse beginning May 3 for a four-week limited engagement.
Starring Saturday Night Live alum Dean Edwards and Bret Raybould, the play—winner of New York Theater Festival’s Best Script and Best Actor awards—is a slapstick spoof of several popular Oscar-bait films.
Written by Raybould and Cristian Duran with direction by Duran, Race: The Movie: The Play follows a white chauffeur named Wyatt Saveyer (Raybould) who serves as the driver for a brilliant black musician named Gene Yus (Edwards) on a tour through the 1850s Deep South. The story quickly unravels and becomes a panoramic parody of all things tone-deaf Hollywood race movies (which according to the show's creators, includes Green Book, 12 Years A Slave, Django Unchained, and more).
The cast also includes Eagle Witt as Stretch, Thee Suburbia as Pyler Terry's Damea, Nick Whitmer as Ray Cist, Amanda Van Nostrand as Jen Trifier, Patrice Battey-Simon as Tuwoke, Menuhin Hart as D-Jango, Quan Wiggins as King T'Challa-Latte, Andre D Thompson as Don Freeman, David Healy as Wyatt Devil, Derek Humphrey as Max Hayte and Mick E. Mouse, R. Alex Murray as Judge Hughbythecolorofyourskin, Rhyis Knight as Thanus, Justin Dinkins as Oscar Beatty, and Brian Simmons as the Stretch understudy. Andrew Hink is the musical director.
