Kearney was a recipient of the Dramatists Guild's Jonathan Larson Musical Theater Fellowship and the Lazarus Family Musical Theater Award, among other honors.

Playwright Jesse L. Kearney, Jr. died March 6, two months after undergoing emergency brain surgery after suffering a sudden brain bleed January 8. News of Mr. Kearney's passing was confirmed by Jacquelyn Bell Kearney, his wife and co-founder of Broadway Advocacy Coalition.

Kearney was an award-winning playwright whose works included Making Michaeux, The Oscar Micheaux Project, The Little Playhouse, and more. Kearney was a recipient of the Dramatists Guild's Jonathan Larson Musical Theater Fellowship and the Lazarus Family Musical Theater Award, among other honors. A graduate of New York Law School and NYU's Musical Theatre MFA writing program, he served as president of Prospect Theater Company, and was the vice president of Black Broadway Men United.

Following Mr. Kearney's emergency surgery, a GoFundMe was launched by his family to ease the financial strain on his young family, raising more than $87,000. Jacquelyn released the following statement via GoFundMe, confirming Mr. Kearney's passing, and inviting friends, family, and supports to his memorial service:

"It is with profound sadness that we share the news of Jesse L. Kearney, Jr.'s passing on Thursday, March 6, 2025. After a courageous two-month battle, Jesse peacefully departed this world.

"Words cannot express our gratitude for your tremendous outpouring of love, prayers, and financial support during this challenging time. Your generosity has been a source of strength for all of Jesse's family as they navigated these difficult months. The financial burden of medical expenses would have been unbearable without your help, and the emotional support you've provided has been equally invaluable.

"We invite you to join us in celebrating Jesse's extraordinary life at a memorial service to be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 11 AM at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, located at 225 W 99th St, New York, NY 10025. This will be a time to honor Jesse's legacy as a visionary playwright, dedicated attorney, loving husband and father, and tireless arts advocate."

Mr. Keaney is survived by his wife, their daughters Cecilia and Loretta, and his mother Shirley.
