How to Broadway-size Your Next Party or Event with PLAYBILLDER

This week's spotlight is Lebanon Trail High School of Frisco, Texas, and their production of Roald Dahl's Matilda. The Tony Award-winning musical follows a young girl who is armed with a sharp wit, unmatched intelligence, and psychokinetic powers. Though she is unloved at home, she cultivates a bond with her schoolteacher, Miss Honey. Under the cruel eye of headmistresses Miss Trunchbull, Matilda must use her courage and cleverness to save her schoolmates from Trunchbull's terrible punishments.

Theatre Director Michael Hollomon shared with Playbill how the performing arts helps students find their voice.

Tell us a little about yourself. What is your proudest moment as an educator?
Michael Hollomon: My proudest moment as an educator is witnessing my students discover their potential and find their voices through theatre. There's no greater joy than seeing a student overcome their fears, step into the spotlight, and own their moment on stage. Watching their confidence blossom and knowing I've played a small part in their journey is incredibly fulfilling.

Can you share a little bit about the value you see in having a performing arts program in schools?
Performing arts programs in schools, especially within Frisco Independent School District, are invaluable because they nurture creativity, collaboration, and communication skills that extend far beyond the stage. These programs provide students with a safe space to express themselves, build confidence, and learn empathy by stepping into the shoes of others. The beauty of the performing arts lies in the process—through rehearsals, problem-solving, and teamwork, students develop a deep understanding of discipline and perseverance. This journey is just as important as the final product, as it teaches students that growth happens through effort and collaboration. Ultimately, the performing arts empower students to find their voice and use it to make an impact, both in their schools and in the world.

What are the most challenging and most rewarding aspects of teaching the performing arts to today’s students?
The most challenging aspect of teaching performing arts today is competing with the distractions of modern life, like social media and academic pressures, which can make full engagement difficult. However, the most rewarding part is watching students grow into confident, empathetic individuals. Seeing their pride when mastering a challenging scene or moving an audience makes all the challenges worthwhile, as the lessons they learn in theatre—collaboration, perseverance, and self-expression—translate far beyond the stage.

Tell us a little bit about the production. What are the kids loving about the show?
The students are absolutely loving the chance to bring these larger-than-life characters to life. From Matilda’s bravery to Miss Trunchbull’s over-the-top villainy, they’ve embraced the humor, drama, and heart of the story. They also enjoy the physicality of the choreography and the opportunity to push their vocal and acting skills to new heights.

What message do you have for your students as they take the stage?
I want my students to know how proud I am of their hard work, dedication, and growth throughout this process. I encourage them to savor every moment on stage and to trust the magic they’ve created together. Theatre is about connection, and I hope they feel the energy and support of the audience and each other as they perform.

What reactions do you expect to see in students when they see their name printed in this Playbill for the first time?
Seeing their name in the Playbill is always a special moment. For many, it’s a reminder of how far they’ve come and the important role they play in the production. I expect to see a lot of excitement, pride, and maybe even a few happy tears as they realize they’re part of something truly meaningful and memorable.
