Off-Broadway's Red Bull Theater honored Tony-winning The Lion King director Julie Taymor with the Matador Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Classical Theater at the June 5 Running of the Red Bulls Gala Benefit at New York's Bowery Hotel.
Hosted by Tony nominee Patrick Page, the evening also featured the presentation of the George Mayer Award for Extraordinary Service to Classical Theater to the Axe-Houghton Foundation.
Harry Lennix presented the Matador Award to Taymor. Tovah Feldshuh presented the George Mayer Award to Foundation President Jeffrey Steinman.
Attendees also enjoyed performances by Reeve Carney; Derek Smith and Tom Hewitt, who joined host Page in a tribute to Taymor; and Luis Quintero, Mark Martin, and Sarin Monae West, who previewed Red Bull's upcoming production of Medea: Re-Versed by, Quintero's rap adaptation of Euripedes' Medea. Marc Vietor directed the evening’s entertainment.
Special guests included Arnie Burton, Robert Cuccioli, Paige Davis, Enid Graham, Mark Linn-Baker, Teresa Avia Lim, Dakin Matthews, Jacob Ming-Trent, Matthew Rauch, Cara Ricketts, Laila Robins, Jennifer Sánchez, Robert Sella, Miriam Silverman, Raphael Nash Thompson, and more, along with musicians Spiff Weigand and Kevin Bernstein.
