Obituaries Original West Side Story Cast Member Carole D’Andrea Has Died

Ms. D'Andrea was one of only six actors from the original Broadway cast to appear in the 1960 film adaptation.

Carole D'Andrea, original Jet girl Velma in West Side Story on Broadway, has passed away at the age of 87. News of her passing was confirmed by her children.

In addition to the role of Velma, Ms. D'Andrea understudied the role of Anybodys. Ms. D'Andrea held the distinction of being one of only six actors from the original Broadway cast of West Side Story to appear in the 1960 film adaptation, in the same role.

Ms. D'Andrea was married to Tony winner Robert Morse for 20 years, and the couple had three children: Robin, Hilary, and Andrea. Both Robin and Hilary followed in their parents' footsteps, entering the theatrical profession.

In recent years, Ms. D'Andrea had moved to the West Coast, where she worked as a performance coach and acting teacher. An advocate for sobriety, Ms. D'Andrea died on the 44th anniversary of her sobriety from alcohol.

Our deepest condolences to her friends and family.
