New Jersey's McCarter Theatre has revealed its upcoming 2023-2024 season, which will include a mounting of the original London production of The Woman in BlackJeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner's Caroline, or Change, and more.

Eisa DavisBulrusher will open the theatre subscription series September 13-October 7, in a co-production with Berkeley Repertory Theatre directed by Nicole A. Watson. The work follows a multiracial girl growing up in the Bay Area in 1955 who finds she has a gift for clairvoyance.

The Woman in Black will follow, running October 13-October 29. The story, written by Susan Hill and adapted by Stephen Mallatratt, recently closed in London's West End after a historic, 33-year run. The mystery sees a visit to an estate on the fog-covered English countryside and a tragedy that continues to haunt all who visit. Robin Herford again directs after staging the London run.

Chicago director Lili-Anne Brown will stage the theatre's production of Caroline, or Change, running March 6-24, 2024. The musical centers on its title character, a Black woman working as a maid for a Jewish family in 1963 Louisiana. The work premiered at Off-Broadway's Public before a 2003 Broadway bow, returning to the Main Stem for its first revival in 2020.

The theatre season will close with Choice, by Wicked book writer Winnie Holzman, running May-June 2, 2024. The timely work follows a journalist researching a story that could reframe how we think about the right to choose, a project that forces her to examine her own life. Sarah Rasmussen will direct.

The theatre's annual holiday offering, A Christmas Carol directed by Lauren Keating, will also return during the holiday season.

Among the theatre's upcoming dance offerings are a work from Funny Girl tap choreographer Ayodele Casel, titled Chasing Magic. The work will take the stage February 8, 2024. The theatre is also hosting a number of non-subscription events, including an evening with David Sedaris October 6, a cabaret performance featuring Alan Cumming and Ari Shapiro November 18, and more.

"We’re thrilled to produce, present, and collaborate on an expansive, imaginative collection of theatrical events and world-class performances for 2023–24," says McCarter Artistic Director Sarah Rasmussen. "Our team curated a season that speaks to McCarter’s values of justice, joy, and belonging. We are eager for audiences to take part in the uniquely personal and shared community experience of engaging with art and artists in our spaces."
