Universal Pictures, Working Title, and Cameron Mackintosh are bringing a remixed, remastered version of the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables back to movie theatres for a worldwide re-release. In the U.S., the film is exclusively in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres for one week only, beginning February 23.
Based on the stage musical and 1862 novel of the same name, the Les Misérables film was originally released December 25, 2012. The movie is directed by Tom Hooper and produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Eric Fellner, with a screenplay by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Herbert Kretzmer.
The star-studded ensemble cast features Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Eddie Redmayne as Marius Pontmercy, Samantha Barks as Éponine, Aaron Tveit as Enjolras, Daniel Huttlestone as Gavroche, and Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen as the Thénardiers.
Upon its initial release, the film saw massive box office success. It made over $442 million worldwide. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Hathaway, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, and Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling.
"It's hard to believe that it is already over 10 years since our musical film of Les Misérables opened to become one of the most successful movie adaptations of a stage musical of all time," director Tom Hooper and producer Cameron Mackintosh said in an earlier joint statement. "We are delighted that to mark the occasion, Universal Pictures is re-releasing a remastered version of the film, with a major remix of tracks in Dolby Atmos and a remaster of the entire picture in Dolby Vision; coming to select cinemas."

The Les Misérables theatrical re-release coincides with the Les Misérables The Arena Spectacular, which will embark on a world tour beginning September 19, 2024. It is also produced by Mackintosh.
Les Misérables originally opened at the Broadway Theatre March 12, 1987, after making its English-language premiere in London in 1985. The work, which is based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name, features music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, and a book by Schönberg and Boublil. The musical has had two Broadway revivals, which played October 24, 2006-January 6, 2008, and March 1, 2014-September 4, 2016.
Set in 19th century France, the work follows the life of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict who strives to reform his life while being relentlessly pursued by Inspector Javert. The story explores themes of justice, love, and revolution against the backdrop a student rebellion.
Ahead of the U.S. release, the film was released in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Ireland February 14; and in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates February 22. The re-release will also be available in South Korea, Germany, The Netherlands, and Denmark in the spring, and in Japan in August.
The film was remixed by Tom Hooper, Cameron Mackintosh, Lee McCutcheon, Stephen Metcalfe and Andy Nelson.
