News LA Philharmonic to Present Lewis Carroll and Beckett Works The LA Philharmonic announces its 2016-17 season, including a re-interpretation of "Alice in Wonderland."

California's LA Philharmonic has announced its 2016-17 season. The slate includes 21 commissioned pieces and 14 world premieres, weaving contemporary and classical music.

Following his acclaimed 2012 opera The Importance of Being Earnest, Irish composer Gerald Barry returns to the Philharmonic with Alice's Adventures, his take on Lewis Carroll's celebrated novel, "Alice in Wonderland." With a libretto by Barry, the world-premiere production will be conducted by Thomas Adès, featuring Barbara Hannigan as Alice, Hilary Summers as The White Queen, Allison Cook as The Red Queen, Allan Clayton as Tweedledum, Mark Stone as The White Knight and Joshua Bloom as The Red Knight. A Tweedledee is yet to be announced. The performance will debut Nov. 22.

In March 2017, Yuval Sharon will stage a production of Franz Schubert songs paired with short plays by Samuel Beckett; the former was apparently the playwright's favorite composer. "This evening-length performance explores the common ground between these two creators in a theatrical evening structured like a recital presentation," states a description on the LA Philharmonic website. "The aim is to unleash the music's drama and the drama's music, and to explore how the austere theatricality of a single Schubert song can illuminate the sonorous beauty of Beckett's taut prose."

The new season also includes an extended tribute to composer John Adams and the introduction of a new cinematic series that will feature popular films screened with live orchestra accompaniment.
