Musical Theatre Factory, the non-profit collective dedicated to musical theatre development and cultivation of emerging writers, has determined the six teams—three individuals and three duos—that will comprise the organization's inaugural cohort of MTF Makers.
The selected artists will take part in an 18-month initiative, consisting of regular meetings and feedback sessions and participation in MTF's suite of developmental opportunities, including studio time, 4x15 series, workshops, and various Joe's Pub series.
Among the inaugural group is Jillian Walker (SKiNFoLK: An American Show), who has been named Starr Maker. The title merits a residency and world-premiere production co-produced by MTF and the Bushwick Starr following the 18-month period.
Additional recipients are Troy Anthony (The River Is Me), Jacob Jarrett (Wonder Boy), Kit Yan and Melissa Li (Interestate), Tidtaya Sinotoke and Straight White Men alum Ty Defoe (Clouds Are Pillows for the Moon), and AriDy Nox (Flawless Feminism) and Brandon Webster (Medicine for Melancholy).
“The inaugural cohort of MTF Makers were chosen for their innovative, ground breaking work, their commitment to stories from under represented communities, and their vision of how musical theatre can transform our culture,” said Producing Artistic Director Mei Ann Teo in a statement. “We are thrilled to support these artist-leaders to make paradigm-shifting work!”
MTF was founded in 2014 by writer and performer Shakina Nayfack. Teo succeeded her as artistic director in the fall.
