The crown has been passed! In celebration of the Broadway revival of Once Upon a Mattress, Carol Burnett stopped by CBS Sunday Morning to reminisce about starring in the original 1959 Broadway production, which made her a star. Watch Burnett and current Mattress star Sutton Foster in conversation in the video above.
Burnett played Princess Winnifred in the Mary Rodgers, Marshall Barer, Dean Fuller, and Jay Thompson musical that was based on the fairytale "The Princess and the Pea." Sutton Foster now plays the role in the revival, and Burnett gave her assessment of the newest swamp princess: "There couldn’t be a better Winnifred."
Once Upon a Mattress officially opens at the Hudson Theatre August 12, with the limited run set to continue through November 30. The production comes to the Main Stem via New York City Center Encores!, and with much of the cast from that run earlier this year.
Following the Broadway run, Foster and Urie (further casting is to be announced) will take the revival to Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre via Center Theatre Group, with performances beginning December 10 and continuing through January 5, 2025.
Also back from the Encores! production is director Lear deBessonet.
