The history-making production at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre is performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and spoken English by a cast of 28.
The Tony-winning musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik is a soulful coming-of-age story set in 19th century Germany (based on the 1891 play of the same title by Frank Wedekind) that sent shockwaves through Broadway in 2006.
No specific dates or cities for the tour have been announced, though a statement from the producers quoted directors of the Seattle Theatre Group and the ASU Gammage Theatre in Tempe, AZ, as expressing "excitement" about the tour.
Douglas C. Baker, producing director of Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles, was quoted saying, "We look forward to having it back in Los Angeles, where it began.” Spring Awakening Broadway producer Ken Davenport said, "This beautiful production has broken new ground on Broadway and has given people a new way to experience an already-stellar piece of musical theatre. We are thrilled to be able to bring it to a wider audience in cities across the country."
The cast features Robert Ariza, Miles Barbee, Katie Boeck, Alex Boniello, Joshua Castille, Lizzy Cuesta, Daniel N. Durant, Treshelle Edmond, Sandra Mae Frank, Kathryn Gallagher, Sean Grandillo, Elizabeth Greene, Russell Harvard, Amelia Hensley, Van Hughes, Lauren Luiz, Daniel Marmion, Austin McKenzie, Andy Mientus, Anthony Natale, Patrick Page, Ren, Krysta Rodriguez, Daniel David Stewart, Ali Stroker, Alexandria Wailes, Alexandra Winter and Alex Wyse.
Spring Awakening is directed by Michael Arden and choreographed by Spencer Liff. The Deaf West production of Spring Awakening officially opened on Broadway Sept. 27, 2015. It's been nine years since the groundbreaking rock musical first stormed Broadway in 2006.
