Tony Award– and Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Tony Kushner celebrates his birthday July 16. In honor, we're taking a look back at the star-studded, Tony-winning revival of Kushner's masterpiece, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes.
The revival, which stared Nathan Lane and Andrew Garfield (both of whom picked up Tony Awards for their performances), played a limited engagement at the Neil Simon Theatre, opening on March 25, 2018, and closing July 15 that year after extending its originally scheduled 14–week run by two weeks. The production earned 11 RTony Award nominations—the most of any play in Broadway history—and, in addition to wins for Lane and Garfield, also too home the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
The production transferred from London's National Theatre, complete with direction by Marianne Elliott. The cast included Garfield as Prior Walter, Lane as Roy Cohn, Denise Gough as Harper Pitt, Susan Brown as Hannah Pitt, James McArdle as Louis Ironson, Lee Pace as Joseph Pitt, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Belize, and Amanda Lawrence as the Angel (played at select performances by Beth Malone).
