Casting director Alan Filderman passed away March 19 after an extended battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mr. Filderman was known for his exacting tastes and unrelenting loyalty toward the art of theatre making. On Broadway, he was a part of the original casting teams for Once On This Island (starring LaChanze, Kecia Lewis, and Jerry Dixon), The High Rollers Social and Pleasure Club (starring Michael McElroy, Nikki Rene, and Allen Toussaint), Master Class (starring Zoe Caldwell, Audra McDonald, and later Patti LuPone), and Marie Christine (starring McDonald, Mary Testa, and Anthony Crivello).
His final Broadway credit, in 2009, was an extension of his extensive resume on the regional theatre circuit. 33 Variations, starring Jane Fonda, Zach Grenier, and Colin Hanks, originated at Washington D.C.'s Arena Stage, where Mr. Filderman worked extensively. Amongst his long list of regional credits were long relationships with Berkshire Theatre Festival, The O'Neill, Syracuse Stage, Kansas City Rep, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Weston Playhouse, Philadelphia Theatre Company, McCarter Theatre, Actors Playhouse, The Hanger Theatre, and Theatre Works.
Much of the final years of Mr. Filderman's life was spent teaching at New York University. He was a beloved professor whose brutal honesty was tempered by his seemingly limitless desire to help others improve in every way possible.
Information on a public memorial for Mr. Filderman is forthcoming.
