Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: El Mago Pop Works Its Magic to Become Top Grosser

Magic reigned supreme on Broadway last week, with the 10-day limited engagement of El Mago Pop becoming the top-grossing show. Over 13 performances (the show played an expanded schedule from the traditional eight), the Spanish import brought in $2.72 million. Combined with the six performances the show gave the previous week, that brings its total to $3.34 million over just 10 days. No doubt bolstered by an impressive Today Show preview that saw magician Antonio Díaz magically transporting four audience members chosen at random from one end of the Today Show plaza to the other, the show's performances last week broke the house records at the Barrymore.

Also topping the charts was the Lea Michele-led revival of Funny Girl, in its penultimate week on the board (the production is set to close September 3). Audiences are flocking to see the Glee star as Fanny Brice (not to mention theatre legend Tovah Feldshuh, co-starring as Mrs. Brice), sending the box office at the August Wilson to $2.13 million, a house record for an eight-performance week. With the exception of a nine-performance New Year's Eve week, it was the highest weekly gross of the production's run. Helping this box-office bonanza was the revival's average ticket price of $226.98, the top of any show this week.

Filling out the top five were mainstays The Lion KingHamilton, and Wicked. Usual high grosser Sweeney Todd predictably dropped last week with both of its A-list stars out with COVID, even while still bringing in a more-than-impressive $1.37 million.

As for plays, Good Night, Oscar said goodbye to Broadway with the highest gross of its entire run, earning $1.15 million before playing its final performance August 27. The Sean Hayes-led Oscar Levant bioplay was beaten out only by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for the title of highest-grossing play of the week, with the latter bringing in $1.16 million.

Broadway cumulatively saw a healthy summer week, surely, at least partially, with the help of El Mago Pop's wild success—too bad its run wasn't longer! With one less show than the previous week, cumulative grosses rose more than 5% for a grand total of $27,215,118, with 86% of seats filled.
