The 2024 awards season continues in high gear, with an array of theatre favorites scoring Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for their work on screen in the past year. Winners, selected by a large voting body of fellow performers and often a harbinger of the upcoming Oscars, will be revealed February 24 on Netflix.
This year's SAG Awards are under particular scrutiny, as they celebrate performances in films and shows that were released during the union strike, which lasted for 118 days after negotiations with the studios broke down. While a new pact was reached in November, the strike undoubtedly affected the marketing and release schedules of the productions that will be celebrated at this year's ceremony.
This year's film categories were studded with many of the familiar names being bandied about in Oscar predictive circles. Leading performance nominees included Bradley Cooper for his work as Leonard Bernstein in Maestro, Jeffrey Wright for his performance in American Fiction, Colman Domingo for his performance in Rustin, Paul Giamatti for his performance in The Holdovers, Carey Mulligan for her work as Felicia Montealegre in Maestro, and Emma Stone for her performance in Poor Things.
In the featured film performance categories, Robert De Niro was nominated for his performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, Sterling K. Brown was nominated for his performance in American Fiction, Da’Vine Joy Randolph was nominated for her performance in The Holdovers, and Danielle Brooks was nominated for her performance in The Color Purple.
Additionally, both The Color Purple and American Fiction picked up nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
In the television categories, the Broadway-filled period drama The Gilded Age took in an Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series nomination, alongside The Last of Us and Succession, both of which feature a variety of theatrical talent. Comedies Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, and Ted Lasso took in their equivalent Ensemble awards, with Hannah Waddingham being individually nominated for her performance in the final season of Ted Lasso.
Both Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan were nominated for their work in the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as was Keri Russell for her performance in The Diplomat. Pedro Pascal was nominated for his performance in The Last of Us, Billy Crudup was nominated for his performance in The Morning Show, and Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Matthew Macfadyen were all nominated for their work on Succession.
In the limited series and television movie categories, Uzo Aduba brought in a nomination for her performance in Painkiller, Kathryn Hahn was nominated for her performance in Tiny Beautiful Things, Tony Shalhoub was nominated for his performance in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, and Matt Bomer was nominated for his performance in Fellow Travellers.
