Broadway News Alex Brightman Sidelined From Broadway Beetlejuice After COVID-19 Diagnosis

Tony nominee Alex Brightman is currently sitting out of Beetlejuice following a COVID-19 diagnosis. He is expected to return to the Netherworld May 31. The performer shared the news via Twitter.

"I tested positive for COVID and I will be out of the show until May 31st," writes Brightman. "Go and see our incredible understudies and I will see you all in less than a week. Even demons need to rest."

Reopening on Broadway April 8, Beetlejuice currently stars Brightman as the the title poltergeist, opposite Elizabeth Teeter as Lydia Deetz. Based on the Tim Burton film, the musical follows an unusual teenager Lydia as she deals with loss and a deal with a demon gone wrong. The work originally opened April 25, 2019 at the Winter Garden Theatre.

The cast also features Kerry Butler, David Josefsberg, Adam Dannheisser, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, Kelvin Moon Loh, Danny Rutigliano, and Dana Steingold.

Alex Timbers directs the musical, which features an original score by Tony nominee Eddie Perfect, and a book by Tony nominees Scott Brown and Anthony King. Music supervision, orchestrations, and incidental music are by Kris Kukul, and choreography is by Connor Gallagher.

The creative team also includes scenic designer David Korins, costume designer William Ivey Long, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, sound designer Peter Hylenski, projection designer Peter Nigrini, puppet designer Michael Curry, special effects designer Jeremy Chernick, hair and wig designer Charles G. LaPointe, make-up designer Joe Dulude II, and physical movement coordinator Lorenzo Pisoni.

Illusions are by Michael Weber, while dance arrangements are by David Dabbon. Also serving on the production/creative team are Rachel Vauder as production stage manager, Catie Davis as associate director, Nancy Renee Braun as associate choreographer, and Jenny Gersten as line producer. Casting is by Telsey + Company and Rachel Hoffman, and music producing is by Matt Stine.
