Nominations for the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, honoring the best in film and TV, were announced December 6. Among this year’s top contenders are two movie musicals with deep theatrical roots: Mary Poppins Returns and A Star Is Born. The films scored Best Motion Picture nods in Musical or Comedy and Drama, respectively.
Both movies also saw nominations for its two leading players: Emily Blunt and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda for Mary Poppins Returns, and Tony nominee Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga for A Star is Born (Cooper was also nominated in Best Director – Motion Picture). Aptly enough, the titles were also recognized for their music; Broadway composer Marc Shaiman received a Best Original Score nod for Mary Poppins Returns, and A Star Is Born’s “Shallow” appeared in the Best Original Song Category.
A number of nominees can currently or soon be seen on the New York stage. Lucas Hedges, starring on Broadway in The Waverly Gallery, was nominated for Boy Erased, and Glenn Close, now Off-Broadway in the Public Theater’s Mother of the Maid, was recognized for The Wife. Two stars of the upcoming Broadway revival of Burn This received nods: Adam Driver for BlacKkKlansman and Keri Russell for The Americans.
After winning an Emmy Award earlier this year, Broadway alum and Elsie Fest founder Darren Criss picked up his first Golden Globe nod, for his leading performance as Andrew Cunanan on FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Also in the Ryan Murphy television universe is Tony Award winner Billy Porter, who earned a nomination for his work on Pose.
Additional stage alums to earn nominations were Tony nominees John C. Reilly (Stan & Ollie), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects), Tony winner Alan Arkin (The Kominsky Method), Sam Rockwell (Vice), Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy), Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Robert Redford (The Old Man & The Gun), Emma Stone (The Favourite), Kristen Bell (The Good Place), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Debra Messing (Will & Grace), Candice Bergen (Murphy Brown), Ben Whishaw (A Very English Scandal), Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Antonio Banderas (Genius), Kieran Culkin (Succession), and Henry Winkler (Barry).
