The national storytelling series Queer To Tell is producing two shows this April: "That's What We Call...Growth" at Tend Greenpoint plant shop and "There's No Place Like Home" at Ginger's Bar.
Queer To Tell is a NYC born national storytelling series that features LGBTQIA+ storytellers, is hosted by a local drag/queer performance artist, and takes place at Queer-owned/affirming spaces across the country. The series takes place in non-traditional performance spaces to create a space that feels like an intimate gathering audiences are happening upon rather than a theatrical performance. Each show has a different theme that allows for storytellers to share the universal experiences we as a community share but also the nuances of our different identities. This series was established to document the myriad of stories that exist within the LGBTQIA+ community, facilitate and encourage community building, and claim space in places that are actively celebrating and protecting us.
Since launching in Pride Month 2023, we've hosted shows at Til Death, Vers BK, Astoria Bookshop, Club Cumming, Otis & Finn Barbershop, Ginger's Bar, The Tank, and the Irish Rep in New York City, as well as Captain Quack's/Reverie Books in Austin, TX.
Ideally, we would love this show to feature storytellers from all throughout the community and from all walks of life; not just performers and artists but lawyers, designers, entrepreneurs, activists, baristas, bartenders, caretakers, teachers, Uber drivers, and any other Queer person who has a story to tell.
DATES, LOCATIONS, AND THEMES:
Thursday, April 10th. Time: Doors open 7:00 PM, Show starts 7:30 PM - 9:15 PM @ Tend Greenpoint. Theme: "That's What We Call...Growth" - It is the most natural thing about us. Just like the world around us, we are destined to grow, and change, and become something different, something new every day. This show is for stories about life's most pivotal moments -- moments where we planted the seeds of destiny; nurtured and believed in an idea until it grew into something beautiful; slashed and burned a creation, a relationship, a home to the ground, in order to start anew. Or maybe, you longed to be a plant gay but finally, after years of trying, realized you just suck at it? What seeds have you planted, crops have you tended, bouquets have you curated, trees have you cared for that grew to become forests in your own life? More mushy, metaphorical plant talk...
Monday, April 28th. Time: Doors open 7:00 PM, Show starts 7:30 PM - 9:15 PM @ Ginger's Bar. Theme: "There's No Place Like Home" - Like Glinda the Good says at the end of The Wizard of Oz, "Click your heels together three times and say 'There's no place like home.'" Home can mean so many things -- It can be a literal place: your childhood home, a home you built, an apartment you found and, over years of work, made into your own. It can be a bit more figurative: the arms of someone you love, the first time you got onstage and knew this is what you were meant to do, the coffee shop you found your community in. It can hold a great deal of happiness and joy, but can also hold pain and sadness. Whatever it may be, it is something we all seek to find and build into a space we can depend on, find comfort, and feel completely ourselves in. There truly is no place like it. **We are seeking an all Women, Trans and/or Gender Non-Conforming lineup for this show**
FOR THE SHOW:
In the show, you will perform a story ranging from 7 - 10 minutes (3 - 5 pages) in accordance with the theme for the evening. These stories DO NOT have to be memorized, but they should be worked on. There will be a music stand for you to put pages or an iPad on and read from should you need it. The week prior to your show, we will workshop your story to get the first time sharing jitters out and make sure you feel ready to go come showtime. If you’re unfamiliar with the form of storytelling or need some inspiration for topics and structure, I highly recommend watching some videos from The Moth’s Mainstage playlist. The Moth is one of the leaders in teaching and presenting the artform of storytelling and is a great resource. Also, check out the Queer To Tell Instagram for photos and videos from our previous shows.
In the interest of transparency, this is not a paid opportunity. If that isn't for you, we totally understand. The show will be ticketed, but all profits will go back into the event. However, we will be able top provide you with a recording of your story and professionally taken shots of your performance. In addition, due to time and the desire to create as diverse a lineup as possible, not everyone who submits will be selected. However, this is a regular series so please submit for one of our future shows at Ginger's or elsewhere in the city.
TO SUBMIT:
If interested, please fill out the attached Google Form. If you have multiple stories for each theme, feel free to submit multiple forms. We hope to have the show lineup for the show at Tend complete by March 28th and the show at Ginger's by April 11th, so please fill out the form sooner rather than later.
If you have any questions about the show, your story, anything at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to [email protected].
