Tony-winning smash musical Dear Evan Hansen has finally announced the answer to the question on everyone’s mind: Who is replacing Ben Platt?

The 2017 Tony winner for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical has been hailed for his portrayal of a cripplingly anxious teenager whose lie about a classmate spins out of control into a social media movement of hope. In addition to the Tony, Platt was the youngest-ever recipient of the Drama League’s Distinguished Performance Award.

Still, those New Balance shoes must be filled when Platt plays his final performance November 19, 2017.

Beginning November 21, Noah Galvin will take over the role full time. Then, starting January 18, 2018 Hello, Dolly!’s Taylor Trensch will replace Galvin.

Dear Evan Hansen marks Galvin’s Broadway debut, but the young talent has been a formidable stage talent (and vocal force) for over a decade. Galvin has appeared in numerous Off-Broadway productions at New York’s Signature Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, MCC, The Vineyard, The Public, The Culture Project, The Flea, The Wild Project, New York Theater Workshop, the Barrow Street Theater, Rattlestick, Ensemble Studio Theater, and more. He appeared in the world premiere of Ace, directed by Stafford Arima, at the Cincinnati Playhouse in 2006. In 2010, he originated the role of Dusty in Playwrights Horizon’s production of The Burnt Part Boys. Fun fact: Dear Evan Hansen co-star Michael Park, who plays Larry Murphy, starred in that same production, so the two should already have a rapport going into Galvin’s engagement.

Most recently, Galvin played Kenny O’Neal on the television series The Real O’Neals. He even put his musical theatre chops to work in an original song and dance about his character’s first relationship.

Galvin commented on his casting on Instagram:

After Galvin’s limited engagement, Trensch will play the title role. Currently on Broadway as Barnaby Tucker (sidekick to Tony winner Gavin Creel’s Cornelius Hackl) in the musical event Hello, Dolly!, Trensch made his Broadway debut in another hit musical: Wicked. The actor took on the role of Boq four a three-month stint in 2012. After that, he originated the role of Michael Wormwood in Broadway’s Matilda The Musical.

Trensch then put his dramatic chops to work as leading man in the straight play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time for a year, following the exit of Tony winner Alex Sharp.

A Florida native, Trensch was an acting major at Tampa’s Howard W Blake School of the Arts and pursued a BFA in musical theatre from Elon University. However, during his sophomore year of college, he was cast in the national tour of Spring Awakening as a replacement for Moritz. Looks like teenage angst is in his wheelhouse.
