A developmental lab of a musical version of the 1995 film comedy Clueless will be held July 5–27, according to an Actors’ Equity casting notice.

Several members of the creative team for the Tony-nominated musical Rock of Ages are working on Clueless, including Tony-nominated director Kristin Hanggi, choreographer Kelly Devine, and musical supervisor Ethan Popp. Amy Heckerling, who penned the screenplay and directed the film, has written the libretto for the musical, which will feature songs from the pop/rock/R&B catalogs of the 1990s.

A previous workshop, also helmed by Hanggi, took place in 2016. The May presentation starred Taylor Louderman (Kinky Boots) and Dave Thomas Brown (Heathers).

The Dodgers and Tommy Mottola are producing; casting is by Tara Rubin Casting/Merri Sugarman.

Clueless was loosely based on Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma, about a young woman who meddles in her friends' romances, with sometimes disastrous effects. The film version starred Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd, and Brittany Murphy. Scott Rudin was one of the producers.

The musical, according to the casting notice, “follows the adventures Beverly Hills teenager, Cher, a big-hearted girl who is determined to make everyone's life as happy as her own, whether they want it or not.”
